Nearly seven years ago, Almost Heaven was born out of both necessity and a dream. Faced with the sudden closure of the salon we were working in, we had a choice: find somewhere else to work—or build something of our own. We took a leap of faith, scraped together a $1500 personal loan, and poured our hearts into creating something that felt like home.

Inside these walls, we’ve shared so much more than just a workspace. We’ve laughed until we cried, cried until we laughed, and held each other through every high and low. We’ve watched our coworkers become lifelong friends, moved mountains to support one another, helped raise each other’s kids, and cheered each other on as some moved away or branched out to start their own businesses. We’ve been there for our clients through love, loss, celebration, and grief—and they’ve done the same for us.

We’ve hosted music festivals, markets, photo shoots, sip and paints, and so many spontaneous moments of magic. We’ve marched in parades, learned to dance with fire, made music videos, joined community orgs, taken classes, and chased growth with everything we had. We’ve faced hardships—a pandemic, a 55% rent hike, and more personal and professional challenges than we could count—but we did it together. And somehow, we still managed to love every minute of it, even the hardest ones.

None of this would have been possible without the love and support of our community, our clients, and our fellow artists. You have shown up for us in ways we’ll never forget.

On May 31, Almost Heaven Body Art Collective will officially close our doors on Lafayette Street. After a year of scraping by through a brutal rent increase, we’ve now learned the building is being sold, with no real communication about what that means for us. We’re heartbroken. We’re also tired. We don’t know exactly what comes next, but we know this chapter is coming to a close.

This may not be goodbye forever—but it is goodbye for now.

We have endless belief in our staff, and we know that wherever they go, they will continue to shine. We were always more than a salon—we were and are a Collective. Our people are already making plans to continue their work elsewhere, and they’ll be reaching out with updates about how to stay connected and where to book. If you have an appointment before May 31 and haven’t heard from your pro yet, chances are you’ll get one last visit at Almost Heaven.

Our website will stay up through the end of the year with contact info and updates. Please be patient as we all navigate this big change. It’s scary—but it’s also a little exciting.
